Industrial Training Institutes
Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET) – Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is responsible for laying down guidelines, rules and regulations and formulating policies for Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in India. These Institutes have been established with an aim to provide vocational training to students. The major emphasis is on developing industry-specific skills in a student by providing technical training to work with an aim to develop a skilled workforce in India.
According to available data, there are 14,312 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) functioning in India. Out of them, 2,204 are administered by the Government and 12,108 are Private Institutions. All of them, however, are affiliated to the National Council of Vocational Training. The detailed list is as follows. As per the same, U.P. has a total of 2,920 followed by Rajasthan which has 1,883.
ITI Courses in India & Eligibility
ITIs offer several Courses or Training Programmes in India, which are called as ‘Trades’. Each trade focuses on a specific set of skills or industry need. The duration of ITI Courses ranges from six months to two years. The duration of the course depends upon the nature and type of the Course. The eligibility criteria for ITI courses vary for each course. Students can take up ITI courses after Class 8, Class 10 or Class 12. The list of ITI courses are as follows :-

Once the candidates have completed their coursework and training, they have to appear for AITT (All India Trade Test) that comprises practical as well as a written exam. Candidates who pass this exam are awarded the NTC (National Trade Certificate) and are eligible to take up jobs in their respective fields.

ITI Courses Eligibility Criteria
Getting admission to any course depends on you clearing its eligibility criteria. If you fail to meet the eligibility conditions set by the institute for the course, you will not be considered for admission to the programme. Given below are some basic eligibility criteria for ITI courses that you must qualify. Apart from these, the institute from which you seek to pursue the course might have some other set of conditions as well. You must check out the detailed prerequisites of the course at the institute before applying for admission.
- You must have cleared class 8th/ 10th or 12th in the regular mode.
- The school from which you complete your Course must come under a recognised Board of Education.
- It is mandatory for you to have received passing marks in all the exams that you have in class 8th / 10th or 12th .
- Depending upon the choice of ITI course in which you seek admission, you must compulsorily have some subjects at the class 8th / 10th or 12th.
ITI Courses Admission Process
The admission process of ITI courses is carried out in different ways. Students must check the selection process used by their preferred institutes beforehand so that they get a good understanding of the procedure. Usually, the following methods are used for selecting applicants.
- In most cases, the selection of students is done on the basis of merit. Candidates are shortlisted depending upon their marks in the qualifying examination. The Institute releases a cut off list in which applicants with higher marks are given preference.
- Some Institutes conduct their individual Entrance Exams for selecting students. The applicants have to appear for the Exam and they are assessed on the basis of their performance in the same.
- The round of Personal Interview is also organised at some Institutes for selection.
ITI Courses Fee Structure
The ITI course fee in various states is less than the Engineering Courses. The ITI trades fee in Government and Private ITIs is different. Mostly, the fees range from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 9,000 for ITI Engineering Trades. For ITI Non-Engineering Trades, the fees may be around Rs. 3,950 to Rs. 7,000. Students need to pay extra fees for the Hostel if they wish to avail the same. Various States provide Full Concession or Partial in fees for the Students belonging to Reserved Categories. Students can pay the total course fee in laid down instalments also.
ITI Admission Dates 2021
The 2021 admission process for ITI courses in India has been delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic. The general dates for ITI admission can be checked below –

State Wise ITI Admission
As stated above, ITI admission process varies from one State to another. Therefore, it is better to understand the ITI admission process of different States individually. The ITI admission process of some States is elaborated below.
Andhra Pradesh
Department of Employment and Training – Government of Andhra Pradesh is responsible for conducting ITI admissions in Andhra Pradesh. Usually, ITI admissions in Andhra Pradesh begin in the month of July. ITI Vijayawada is the centre for ITI admissions in Andhra Pradesh. The application process is divided into two steps, and the candidates can follow any one of the steps to register for ITI courses: –
Step 1: – Candidates can visit ITI Vijayawada on scheduled dates prescribed by the admission authority. The officials at ITI Vijayawada will upload the details of the candidates on the server. For this purpose, the Candidates will have to download the application form for the ITI website of Andhra Pradesh and fill it. The filled-in application form must be submitted at ITI Vijayawada. While submitting the application, the officials will take the photograph of the candidates through Webcam. The application fee has to be paid at the respective centre.
Step 2: – Candidates who are unable to visit ITI Vijayawada must download the application from the official website. The filled-in application form can be sent by post to ITI Vijayawada. The Candidates must enclose two passport size photographs and xerox copies of relevant documents to the application form and send it by post. The application fee has to be paid in the nearest AP Online centre, and the Candidates must send the fee receipt along with the application form.
Admission Process: After the closure of the application process, the admission authority will release a merit list on the official website of ITI admissions, Andhra Pradesh. The candidates will have to take part in the online counselling process and exercise web options. The seats will be allocated as per merit, candidate’s preference and availability of seats.
Bihar
Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) is responsible for conducting ITI admissions in Bihar. BCECEB conducts ITICAT (ITI Common Entrance Test) for the admission to ITI courses in Bihar. Usually, BCECEB conducts ITICAT in the month of May every year, and the online application process for the same begins in April.
Admissions Application Process: Students can visit the official website of BCECEB to submit the online application for ITICAT. A valid E-Mail ID is mandatory to complete registration for ITICAT. The applicants must upload the scanned copy of Passport Size photograph while submitting the ITICAT application form.
Application Fee: The application fee as prescribed can be paid online.
Admission Process: The ITI admissions in Bihar are based on the rank or score obtained by the candidates ITICAT exam. The Candidates must take part in the counselling process conducted by BCECEB and exercise web options. The seats will be allocated based on rank and Candidate’s preference subject to availability of seats in the respective ITI.
Kerala
Directorate General of Employment & Training, Kerala is responsible for conducting ITI admissions in Kerala. There is no entrance exam for ITI admissions in Kerala. Usually, the admission authority begins Kerala ITI admission process in the month of June every year.
Admissions Application Process: Candidates must submit the online application form for ITI courses through the official website of DTE Kerala. After filling the online application form, the candidates must take the printout of the same. The printout of application form along with self-attested xerox copies of academic certificates must be submitted at the concerned ITI where the candidate wants to take admission.
Application Fee: For Kerala ITI admissions, the registration fee as applicable is to be paid.
Admission Process: DTE Kerala will prepare the ITI merit list and seats will be allocated accordingly. The admission is based on merit. Candidates will mostly get a seat in their preferred ITI. The seat allocation results can be checked through the official website of DTE Kerala.
Delhi
Department of Training and Vocational Education, Government of Delhi is responsible for conducting ITI Admissions in Delhi. Usually, ITI admission process in Delhi begins in the month of June every year. There is no entrance exam for the admission to ITI courses in Delhi.
Application Process: Eligible students can start filling the online application form for Delhi ITI admissions through the official website of ‘ITI Delhi Admissions’. While filling the online application form, the candidates must exercise the choices. After filling the online application form, the candidates must take the printout of the same and must visit the nearest Government ITI for verification of documents (original and Xerox copies of academic and other documents).
Application Fee: The application fee is as applicable depending upon the course and ITI (Government or Private).
Admission Process: The ITI admission process in Delhi is purely based on merit. The admission authority will provide a rank to all the applicants by calculating the percentage of marks or grades acquired by the candidates in Class 8/Class 10/Class 12. The seat allocation is based on the rank of the candidates. The admission authority conducts at least four rounds of counselling to fill the seats in ITI trades.
Gujarat
Directorate of Employment and Training conducts the admission process for ITI courses in Gujarat. Usually, the admission process takes place in the month of June every year. There is no entrance test for the admission to ITI courses in Gujarat. The candidates can submit the online application form through the official website of Gujarat ITI Admissions to register for ITI courses. The admission is purely based on merit.
Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education is the authority of conducting ITI admissions in Uttarakhand. The authority conducts an entrance exam in the month of June every year for the admission to ITI trades. The application process for the entrance test begins in March.
Admissions Application Process: Candidates can submit the online application through the official website of Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education to register for the entrance test.
Application Fee: The exam authority decides the application fee for Uttarakhand ITI entrance test from time to time.
Admission Process: The ITI admissions in Uttarakhand are based on the marks scored by the candidates in the entrance test.
Manipur
Directorate of Craftsmen & Training, Manipur is responsible for conducting Manipur ITI admissions. ITI aspirants in Manipur must clear an entrance test conducted by the exam authority to get admission in ITIs.
Admissions Application Process: Eligible and interested candidates can fill the online application form for the ITI entrance test through the official website of Directorate General of Employment and Training.
Application Fee: The exam authority decides the application fee for Manipur ITI entrance test from time to time.
Admission Process: The ITI admissions in Manipur are based on the marks scored by the candidates in the entrance test.
Note: The admission authority might change the admission process from time to time. Therefore, the candidates must be updated with the latest improvements with regard to ITI admissions in Manipur.
West Bengal
Selection for ITIs will be conducted by the West Bengal State Council for Vocational Training. It is a state level admission procedure which is conducted every year. Admission will be offered in E and M group courses of ITI. A common entrance test (CET) is conducted by the authority for providing admission in group E trades. In M group trades candidates will get admission based on the marks obtained by them in qualifying examination. Candidates have to apply online for the same.
Odisha ITI Admission 2021
Department of Technical Education (DTE) Odisha and SAMS (Student Academic Management System) jointly conduct the admission process for various ITI courses in Odisha. Students aspiring to get admission in any government or private ITI in Odisha must register through SAMS to be eligible for the selection process. There is no entrance exam for ITI admission in Odisha, and the candidates will be selected on the basis of his/ her marks in Class 10th.
Assam ITI Admission 2021
The admission into various programmes in the Assam Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) every year is regulated by the Directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training, Assam which functions under the Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Department, Govt. of Assam. For admission into the Assam ITIs, the aspirants do not have to appear in any entrance exam. The Assam ITI selection is done on the basis of marks secured by the applicants in their previous qualifying examination
Goa ITI Admission 2021
Goa has set up Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the state under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) and Center of Excellence Scheme (CoE) with an objective to produce skilled professionals who would meet the demanding needs of public and private sectors. The government of Goa conducts an online admission process for ITI admission. The admission process is based on merit where the candidates are allocated seats on the basis of performance in Class 10th and college preference.
Apart from the above, the ITI admission process in all other States is either online or offline. Some States may conduct entrance exam for the admission to ITI courses while in others the admissions based on merit.
ITI Course Exam and Certification
- On the completion of the classwork, Candidates have to appear for the AITT (All India Trade Test) that is organized by NCVT(National Council for Vocational Training).
- Once the candidates pass the AITT, candidates will be awarded a National Trade Certificate that will enable them to practice different courses.
